In the field of road markings, a reference is a literal inscription of the name of a place or service on a road sign. Inscriptions on signs are made up of straight L1, L2 or L5 characters, or italic L4 characters. This is a font created especially for directional signs, with condensed characters. Each character must fit within a rectangle with standardised dimensions. There are also L11 and L12 fonts used for signage on LCD screens. In most cases, sign lettering is made up of straight capital letters of type L1 for signs with a light background and type L2 for signs with a dark background. Type L1 characters are used for sign inscriptions. Type L4 italic characters are used for secondary or supplementary inscriptions on type D (direction) and type EB (entrance to and exit from built-up areas) signs.
